Big City Man, Golden Shaheen winner, dead

Big City Man, the winner of the $2 million Golden Shaheen Stakes in Dubai in March, was euthanized last weekend after developing a stomach ailment, trainer Jeff Mullins said.

Mullins said that Big City Man was diagnosed with a strangulated cecum on Sunday morning. The cecum is part of the large intestine. Big City Man was taken from the Hollywood Park backstretch to a local clinic for treatment, but could not be saved.

"There was nothing they could do for him," Mullins said.

Big City Man, who had yet to start for Mullins, worked six furlongs in 1:13.40 on Sunday. Big City Man was a candidate for the $300,000 Bing Crosby Handicap at Del Mar on Aug. 8.

Owned by Prince Sultan Mohammed Saud Al Kabeer, Big City Man won 6 of 7 starts, including four stakes. As a 2-year-old in 2007, he won two stakes at Calder - the Criterium Stakes and the Dr. Fager division of the Florida Stallion Stakes. Big City Man won 3 of 4 starts in Dubai, where he was trained by Jerry Barton, culminating with the victory in the Golden Shaheen Stakes over a straight six furlongs.
