Big Brown romps; Eight Belles euthanized

LOUISVILLE, Ky. – Neither inexperience nor a wide trip could offset the talent of Big Brown in Saturday’s Kentucky Derby at Churchill Downs.

He won the 134th running of the Kentucky Derby in spectacular fashion, rallying from just off the pace and easily winning a race marred by the fatal breakdown of runner-up Eight Belles, who broke down galloping out after the race.

Denis of Cork rallied for third, while never close to the winner or runner-up. Tale of Ekati was fourth.

Big Brown raced 1 1/4 miles on a fast track in 2:01.81, paying $6.80 as the favorite in the field of 20.

Eight Belles, the lone filly in the race, ran bravely in defeat. She broke both ankles, an injury that necessitated she be immediately euthanized, said veterinarian Dr. Larry Bramlage.
