Big Booster closes strong to win Gallant Man

Big Booster won his second consecutive marathon stakes in Sunday's $104,900 Gallant Man Handicap at Hollywood Park, closing five lengths in the final three furlongs of the race over 1 5/8 miles.

Jockey Rafael Bejarano had Big Booster at the back of the field for the first 1 1/4 miles and guided the 7-year-old gelding wide through the stretch to run past his three rivals. Big Booster ($3) was timed in 2:44.48 and won by two lengths.

Jade's Revenge, winner of the Fort Harrod Stakes at Keeneland in April, finished second, followed by Tissy Fit and Victorian Price. Marsh Side, Super Strut, and Top This and That were scratched early Sunday.

Big Booster won the Grade 2 San Juan Capistrano Handicap over about 1 3/4 miles on turf on April 20 in a 7-1 upset. Trainer Mike Mitchell said he plans to keep Big Booster in marathons on turf or the main track, with the goal of starting in the $500,000 Breeders' Cup Marathon at Santa Anita on Oct. 25.
