Biddy's Lad takes Bull Page Stakes

ETOBICOKE, Ontario - Biddy's Lad sprung a 9-1 upset victory over Magic Jack in Sunday's $132,875 Bull Page Stakes, a six-furlong dash for Ontario-sired male 2-year-olds.

It was the first Woodbine stakes win for apprentice Chantal Sutherland, who had Biddy's Lad on a slim lead through quick fractions of :22.17 and :44.95. Magic Jack pressed Biddy's Lad along the rail, before the latter drew off in the final furlong to prevail by 2 1/4 lengths.

Godin was third in the eight-horse field, while 9-5 favorite Lucky Larue flattened out to finish fourth after stalking the pace. The final time was 1:11.25.

"I knew he was fast," said Sutherland, who had never ridden Biddy's Lad before. "I was a little concerned about Lucky Larue, because I knew he'd be trailing me, but my horse ran really good."

Biddy's Lad, trained by Mike Doyle, returned $20.80 in his first stakes success. He earned $79,725 for Springfield Stable and Dura Racing.

* Steady Ruckus held off a closing Dawn Watcher to take Sunday's other Woodbine stakes, the $105,000 Ontario Jockey Club. Steady Ruckus ($5.20) ran seven furlongs in 1:22.06 with Patrick Husbands aboard.
