Beulah: Uncle Virgil stands out in Ohio Freshman

Uncle Virgil will try to replicate his maiden win when taking on nine other Ohio-accredited 2-year-olds in the $50,000 Ohio Freshman at Beulah Park on Saturday.

Trained by Kathy Lowry, Uncle Virgil won his debut locally Nov. 5 by 8 1/4 lengths when ridden out to the wire. That event was at the same six-furlong distance as the Ohio Freshman, and Uncle Virgil earned a Beyer Speed Figure of 59, at least 14 points higher than his nearest rival’s lifetime best.

Uncle Virgil is part of a three-horse M.Y. Stables entry with the fillies I’m Kiddin and Diamond in the Funk. That duo finished second and third, respectively, in the Glacial Princess on Nov. 5, an event for Ohio-accredited fillies. Amanda Tamburello will ride Diamond in the Funk and Albin Jimenez retains the mount on I’m Kiddin. Luis Gonzalez will be back aboard Uncle Virgil.

Baker’s Haulover earned the second best lifetime Beyer in his last out, a maiden win here Oct. 21 against open company. Trained by Doug Cowans, Baker’s Haulover has three second-place finishes to go with his lone win in five starts. Perry Ouzts, aboard for his maiden win, retains the mount.

Swiss Miss Too is the other winner in the Ohio Freshman, having taken the Glacial Princess for trainer Bobby Cline by a neck. Swiss Miss Too is one of four fillies in this event. Edgar Paucar will ride once again.
