Beulah: Pay the Man pulls away for three-peat in Scarlet and Gray Handicap

Pay the Man was kept just off the quick early pace and on the inside by jockey Luis Gonzalez before being swung midtrack into the stretch and rallying to a 4 1/2-length victory in the $50,000 Scarlet and Gray Handicap for Ohio-bred older fillies and mares Saturday afternoon.

Trained by Miguel Feliciano, Pay the Man won this event for the third consecutive year in a final time of 1:11.45 over a track labeled sloppy. The outcome of the race was never in doubt after midstretch, it was just a matter of how much Pay The Man would win by as she extended the lead with every stride in late stretch.

Longshot Doubled Vision chased the quick early pace and settled for second, three parts of a length in front of Startin Something in third.

Pay the Man returned $6.80 to win. Favorite Caviar N Champagne was fractious in the gate, sitting down twice, and then failed to respond to jockey Patrick Valenzuela in the six-furlong event.
