Beulah Park: Catlaunch by a nose in Gendelman Memorial

GROVE CITY, Ohio – The venerable Catlaunch needed every inch of the Beulah Park stretch to come back and put his nose on the wire first in the $50,000 Sydney Gendelman Memorial Handicap on Sunday.

Trained by Ivan Vazquez, Catlaunch set the pace under Megan Fadlovich in the 1 1/16-mile race while well off the rail until upper stretch. The 12-year-old gelding was overtaken in the stretch but dug in gamely. With 10 yards to go, he looked beaten but forged ahead to win by a nose over Master Rocket.

The $30,000 winner’s share of the purse put Catlaunch over $1.1 million in career earnings from 105 starts.

Master Rocket was a length in front of the late-charging Bold Captain, who was third.

Catlaunch returned $20.80 to win after getting his first victory since 2011. The $2 exacta with Master Rocket paid $685.40. The running time over a fast track was 1.48.17. Catlaunch won the Gendelman each year from 2009-11, when it was scheduled for turf at River Downs but moved to the main track each time. He was sixth in last year’s running on turf at that venue.
