Betty's Wish wins Pebbles

Betty's Wish won her fourth consecutive race and her first graded stakes in Monday's $110,300 Pebbles Handicap at Belmont Park.

Betty's Wish, the 4-5 favorite under John Velazquez, was a 3 3/4-length winner over Mystery Itself in the Grade 3 turf race for 3-year-old fillies. It was another length back to Andover Lady in third in the seven-horse field.

Betty's Wish, the 116-pound highweight, stalked the early leaders, Little Miss Pamela and Boom Bah Yay, before powering away from the field in the stretch.

Betty's Wish ($3.60) covered the 1 1/8 miles in 1:51 over a course labeled good.

Bobby Frankel, who won last year's Pebbles with Glia, trains Betty's Wish for Edmund Gann, who was on hand for the win. Frankel, who married Bonita Boniface in Pennsylvania on Sunday, flew to California after the wedding. Frankel's assistant Jose Cuevas saddled Betty's Wish.

"I didn't want to make the front with her, and I had to wrestle with her a little," Velazquez said. "Speed isn't holding on this course. Once I got her to settle, she was fine."
