Bet on Sunshine, 10, retired

LOUISVILLE, Ky. - Bet on Sunshine, a 10-year-old gelding who won 22 races and over $1.4 million, has been retired after coming out of his third-place finish in a Thursday allowance race at Arlington Park with a strained ligament just below an ankle, trainer Paul McGee said Monday.

Bet on Sunshine, purchased as an unraced 3-year-old for $22,000 by owner David Holloway, won 15 stakes and twice finished third in the Breeders' Cup Sprint. One of his legacies was his record in the Phoenix Stakes, the Keeneland fixture in which he raced five times, with two wins, a second, a third, and a fourth. He also won the Arlington Sprint three times.

Bet on Sunshine, a chestnut Florida-bred by Bet Big, was trained throughout his 47-race career by McGee. Holloway said the gelding would soon be turned out to a farm, possibly the Kentucky Horse Park.

"After all he did for us, he'll have a good home," said Holloway.
