Bernardini works five furlongs

Preakness winner Bernardini worked five furlongs in 1:02.27 Thursday morning over a fast Belmont Park main track. Bernardini is being pointed to the $500,000 Jim Dandy Stakes at Saratoga on July 29.

Exercise rider Simon Harris was aboard for the work, which was the 20th of 27 works at the distance.

Trainer Tom Albertrani said he timed Bernardini's last quarter in 24 seconds and caught him galloping out an additional eighth in under 12 seconds.

"It was a nice work," Albertrani said. "At this point you're not worried how fast they're going, you're worried how they're coming back. That's more a concern these days."

Albertrani was referring to the the career-ending sesamoid fracture that his New York-bred 3-year-old filly Mrs. Chippy suffered after working four furlongs in 50.03 seconds Thursday morning.

Deputy Glitters, the Tampa Bay Derby winner, worked five furlongs in 59.37 seconds on Thursday, but Albertrani said Deputy Glitters would not run in Tuesday's Dwyer Stakes. Deputy Glitters was coughing earlier in the week and also broke out in a skin disease.
