German-based breeder Dr. Christoph Berglar, who campaigned multiple Group 1 winner Novellist this season, has won the John Deere Award as outstanding breeder of the 2013 Breeders’ Cup Challenge series and the Breeders’ Cup World Championships.

The award, created in 2011, is presented to the breeder who earned the highest number of points based on graded/group first-place finishes in the 67 Breeders’ Cup Challenge races and the 14 Breeders’ Cup races. Novellist, an Irish-bred 4-year-old son of Monsun, captured three consecutive Group 1 Challenge events – the Grand Prix de Saint-Cloud in France, the King George VI and Queen Elizabeth Stakes in England and the Grosser Preis von Baden in Germany.

Novellist’s 30-point total placed Berglar 10 points ahead of six other breeders, who tied at 20 points each: John and Carole Rio, who bred Breeders’ Cup Classic winner Mucho Macho Man; Morton Fink, breeder of reigning Horse of the Year Wise Dan; London Thoroughbred Services, Ltd., breeder of Breeders’ Cup Filly and Mare Turf winner Dank; Clarkland Farm, which bred Breeders’ Cup Distaff winner Beholder; Andrew Lloyd-Webber’s Watership Down Stud; George Strawbridge; and Gary Rocks.

NTRA Advantage and John Deere will present a John Deere TS Gator utility vehicle to Berglar’s son, Peter, who manages his Stonereath Farm in Paris, Ky.

“We are delighted to receive this award from John Deere,” Berglar said. “For us, Novellist was a great blessing and blessings teach us powerful lessons. Novellist taught us joy, humility and gratitude.”

Ken and Sarah Ramsey won the inaugural John Deere Award in 2011, while Fink earned it last year.
