Beneto named to California racing board

Steve Beneto, a Thoroughbred owner and the president of a California-based aircraft company, has been appointed to the California Horse Racing Board, Gov. Jerry Brown announced on Thursday.

Beneto, 74, of Carmichael, Calif., has owned horses for decades. His current stable includes Longview Drive, a two-time stakes winner on the California fair circuit last year who was third in the Alcatraz Stakes at Golden Gate Fields on May 12. Longview Drive was ninth in the Santa Anita Derby last month.

Beneto has close ties to racing in Sacramento. He served as a member of the California State Fair from 2000-2004 and from 2005-2011 and was chairman in 2001-2002. The California State Fair conducts the racing meeting at the state fairgrounds in Sacramento each summer.

Beneto’s appointment is subject to the approval of the state senate. He is the second appointee by Brown to the racing board in recent months.

Earlier this spring, horse owner Chuck Winner was appointed to the racing board.

Beneto and Winner are to be part of a racing board that includes chairman Keith Brackpool, vice-chairman David Israel, and commissioners Jesse Choper, Bo Derek, and Richard Rosenberg.
