Benefit scheduled for paralyzed jockey Alyssa Selman

There will be a benefit on July 19 for jockey Alyssa Selman, who is paralyzed from the waist down after a bad spill at Assiniboia Downs on June 27.

Selman’s mount, Lord Jasmond, clipped heels with a rival and fell. Selman suffered a back injury that required surgery, and she has been recovering at the Health Sciences Center in Winnipeg, Manitoba.

Donations and prizes have been pouring in for the fundraiser, which will be held at 7 p.m. on the main floor of Assiniboia Downs. Tickets are $15.

Trust funds have been established at TD Canada Trust, Assiniboine Credit Union and Access Credit Union. At the Assiniboia website, donations for Selman can be made through the GoFundMe campaign.

The annual Assiniboia Downs golf tournament on Aug. 17 will also benefit Selman, a 29-year-old married mother of two.
