Belmont Stakes: Napravnik to ride Code West for Baffert

Barbara D. Livingston
Code West will have jockey Rosie Napravnik aboard for the June 8 Belmont Stakes at Belmont Park.

Rosie Napravnik will seek to join Julie Krone as the only female jockeys to have won the Belmont Stakes. She will ride Code West in the Belmont on June 8, trainer Bob Baffert said Thursday.

Napravnik rode Code West to a runaway victory against older allowance horses Saturday at Pimlico in the race following the Preakness.

Napravnik became available for the Belmont when the connections of Mylute decided Wednesday night to skip the race. Napravnik rode Mylute in the first two legs of the Triple Crown, including a third-place finish in the Preakness.

This year marks the 20th anniversary of Krone's Belmont win on Colonial Affair, which remains the only time a female jockey has won a Triple Crown race.

1999, when Lemon Drop Kid won;can't remember who placed; & Charismatic fractured his leg in the stretch and STILL finished third, was one of my bigger sign-up days. And I'll always remember Chris Antley holding up Charismatic's leg to save him for a stallion's life. Love the game, love the horses, love (most) of the people. Go Rosie & Code West!

Code West, out of Lemon Drop Kid, and Rosie aboard. Great combination, pedigree, and history on her side. Lemon Drop Kid, was a killer at the Belmont distance, and hopefully, Code West inherited the gene pool. Baffert, knew what he was doing by keeping Code West, off the Derby trail. A fresh and sound horse, going a mile and one half, have to love the horse. Rosie, you have good shot of emulating Julie Krone, on that historical day.

Hello James. It is a little early to compare,Rosie, to Julie. As a former owner, we had the pleasure to have Julie ride for us. Tough as nails, and not one to take any crap from any jockey, man or gal..Her Belmont win on Colonial Affair, was classic Julie Krone, and will be pretty hard to emulate. However, I am roootingfor Rosie to win the Belmont. She certainly has the talent, and the horse. Good luck Rosie.

In analyzing this horses chances there are a few contradicting factors. Lets start with the breeding I would think this horse is will definitely get the distance but he would probably be better on turf...as for rosie ridding its one of two thing either baffert does not really like his chances or his wife wears the pants in that relationship and convinced him to ride her as was the case with chantal sunderland...this is all preliminary but although he won very well last out he will have too improve to challenge these.

I cashed a huge ticket on that race with Julie, and Colonial affair. Go Rosie. Show the racing gods, that you have the talent and ability to win the Belmont.

She has the talent and ability. What she doesn't have is the horse.

He ran a faster and better race than those who ran in the Preakness on that Saturday. Baffert may have missed his opportunity.
Mr. Ed More than 1 year ago
Wrong, he ran a full two seconds slower at the splits that mattered.
