Shanghai Bobby was found to have a pelvic stress fracture following his fifth-place finish in the Florida Derby.

ELMONT, N.Y. - Shanghai Bobby, last year’s 2-year-old champion male sidelined since the Florida Derby because of injury, returned to trainer Todd Pletcher’s Saratoga barn on May 31 and was to begin walking under tack on Thursday.

Shanghai Bobby was found to have a pelvic stress fracture following his fifth-place finish in the Florida Derby on March 30 and spent two months at the Payton training center in Ocala, Fla.

On Tuesday, an ultrasound of the injured area was clean and Shanghai Bobby was given the green light to continue the second phase of his rehabilitation with expectation of making it back to the races this summer.

“He’ll start back under track training then back to the track jogging a little bit – baby steps along the way,” Pletcher said. “He looks good. We look forward hopefully to get a run into him in Saratoga if everything goes perfect.”

The horse had a pelvic stress fracture in Feb and he's already back in training? I had two horses with pelvic stress fractures and in both cases it took one year to get back to the races.
