Belmont Park: Preachintothedevil draws away in Mike Lee Stakes

Email

ELMONT, N.Y. – A return to a New York-bred stakes certainly perked up Preachintothedevil. He drew off to a 4 1/4-length win Sunday at Belmont Park in the $100,000 Mike Lee for 3-year-olds bred in the state.

Preachintothedevil ($10.40) is now 3 for 4 against fellow New Yorkers. His last four races were all against open company as he hit the road to the Triple Crown for trainer Gary Contessa.

He did not fare well in that quest, beaten 16 lengths by eventual Kentucky Derby winner Animal Kingdom in the Spiral Stakes before coming back to Aqueduct for a 26-length defeat to Toby’s Corner in the Wood Memorial.

His most recent outing was a shift to turf, getting fourth in an overnight stakes.

Back on the main track against statebreds, Preachintothedevil was a dominant force. He battled past 9-10 favorite Bug Juice on the turn and set sail in the lane with a substantial advantage.

Jose Lezcano was aboard for the seven furlongs in 1:22.44.

Tap Attack, away poorly at the break, came on to get second, with Pin Number third.
