After successfully stretching out to 1 1/8 miles in Sunday’s Monmouth Stakes, Data Link will likely be shortened to a mile this summer, with the $500,000 Fourstardave at Saratoga on Aug. 11 as a major target. Trainer Shug McGaughey said that Data Link could prep in the Grade 3, $150,000 Poker, also at a mile, on July 4 at Belmont. Data Link proved himself a solid miler by defeating Turallure – last year’s Breeders’ Cup Mile runner-up – in the Maker’s Mark 46 Mile at Keeneland in April. Soft turf and a troubled trip compromised Data Link in the Woodford Reserve Turf Classic at Churchill. “Firm turf and a little pace in front of him, he’s pretty good,” McGaughey said. “That was a good race at Keeneland when he beat Turallure, and he had the jump on us and we got him.” McGaughey said that Hymn Book, a troubled fifth in the Pimlico Special last month, will make his next start in the Grade 2, $350,000 Suburban Handicap. Hymn Book finished second in last year’s Suburban to Flat Out, who is pointing to a repeat of that race.
