Trainer Todd Pletcher has run at least two horses in the Belmont Stakes in each of the last 13 years and 15 times overall. He is likely to continue that trend this year. Already set to run Kentucky Derby runner-up Renegade in the 158th Belmont on June 6, Pletcher is strongly considering starting recent maiden winner Powershift as well. For the third straight year, this year’s Belmont will be run at Saratoga and at 1 1/4 miles. On Thursday, Renegade and Powershift worked together over the Oklahoma training track, going a half-mile in 49.88 seconds, according to track clockers. A video of the work showed Powershift galloping out stronger of the pair. “I thought they both breezed very well, steady half, on the bridle throughout, looked good,” said Pletcher, a four-time winner of the Belmont Stakes, most recently in 2022, when he ran one-two with Mo Donegal and the filly Nest. “Their energy level seemed good, so we were happy with the way they went.” Pletcher said he planned only two breezes for Renegade and wanted a little more space in between the works than the usual seven days. Renegade will likely have his final workout for the Belmont on May 29 or 30. :: Access the most trusted data and information in horse racing! DRF Past Performances and Picks are available now. Powershift has always been held in high regard by Pletcher and owner Mike Repole. After he was beaten three-quarters of a length by Emerging Market in a fast-run maiden race at Tampa Bay Downs on Feb. 7, Powershift came back in the Tampa Bay Derby where he finished sixth, 9 1/2 lengths behind The Puma. He returned to win the first race on the Kentucky Derby card, a 1 1/16-mile maiden race, at Churchill Downs, . “We’ve been thinking about it. He’s always shown a lot of talent,” Pletcher said of Powershift. “We were ambitious with him and it didn’t quite work out in the Tampa race, rebounded with a good effort. See how he continues to train. I think the two of their styles complement each other. We’ll see how it plays out.” In 2024, Pletcher and Repole ran Mindframe in the Belmont coming off just a maiden and allowance win, the latter race coming on the Kentucky Derby undercard. Mindframe finished second to Dornoch in the Belmont. Pletcher said he has not confirmed a rider for Powershift. He was twice ridden by Irad Ortiz Jr., who is committed to ride Renegade. Renegade’s victories in the Sam Davis and Grade 1 Arkansas Derby made him the expected favorite for the Kentucky Derby. His rail draw may have spooked bettors, who ultimately landed on Blue Grass winner Further Ado as the 5.05-to-1 post time favorite. Renegade went off as the 5.65-to-1 second choice, just ahead of So Happy (5.90-to-1). Renegade, who broke from the rail in the Kentucky Derby, got bounced around several times early in the race and was 15th, three spots ahead of Golden Tempo, while about a dozen lengths off the pace. After saving ground until the three-eighths pole, Ortiz began to swing Renegade toward the outside. In upper stretch, Renegade was joined to his outside by Golden Tempo as the two rallied strongly with Golden Tempo narrowly prevailing. “I felt the horse ran terrific considering how difficult the first sixteenth of a mile was, thought he finished courageously and ran very well,” Pletcher said. Commandment in, ‘Ado’ out Trainer Brad Cox on Thursday confirmed that Commandment, seventh in the Kentucky Derby, would run in the Belmont Stakes. Cox added that Further Ado, 11th as the favorite in the Derby, is being pointed to the Matt Winn Stakes at Churchill Downs on June 7. :: Get the Inside Track with the FREE DRF Morning Line Email Newsletter. He is likely to work again the next two weekends at Churchill before shipping to Saratoga. “I thought his race in the Kentucky Derby was probably better than it looks on paper,” Cox said. “I think it’s going to be a competitive [Belmont] but I think he definitely belongs and deserves the opportunity.” Cox said he has not finalized a jockey for Commandment, who was ridden in the Kentucky Derby by Luis Saez. :: Want to learn more about handicapping and wagering?
