Beauzak returns for Derby

SASKATOON, Saskatchewan - RJ Stable holds all the right cards for Saturday's $15,000 Saskatchewan Derby with invader Beauzak and local star Stop the Act.

The 1 1/16-mile Saskatchewan Derby, previously run in late July, tops the seven-race card that ends the 2003 Marquis Downs meet.

Beauzak began his career here last year and failed to beat a horse in two starts. But, the Alberta circuit agreed with him and he won twice at huge odds at Northlands Park to complete his juvenile campaign.

This year, Beauzak has just one win, against $20,000 claiming company at one mile at Northlands. That effort was enough to convince his connections to run him in the Grade 3 Canadian Derby where he finished sixth.

Beauzak also has a second and a third to show for his five other starts in 2003. His regular Alberta rider, Richard Hamel, has the mount, and the pair should take up a stalking position.

Stop the Act, who will run uncoupled with Beauzak, has 4 wins and 2 seconds from 6 starts this year at Marquis Downs, including stakes victories versus Saskatchewan-breds in his last two starts. Tim Moccasin retains the mount.

Two fillies, She's Nifty and Picture the Answer, will try males. They have finished first and second, respectively, in the last two stakes races for fillies here.

She's Nifty may inherit the role of front-runner in what appears to be a paceless race.

Picture the Answer, winner of the 2002 Prairie Lily Sales Stakes, has chased She's Nifty in her last two starts.

Completing the field are three horses trained by Alphonse Lavallee who will race as separate wagering interests.

Time for Philip appears to be the most dangerous based on his two wins here in July. In his only other local start, Time for Philip finished fourth versus the top handicap horses in the Toon's Handicap at this distance.

Stoneringer won a maiden $5,000 claiming race at 1 1/16 miles at Assiniboia Downs, and Chunk Change is a maiden and has yet to run farther than seven furlongs.
