Beaten fave Grovenor tries again

CALGARY, Alberta - Grovenor, a beaten favorite in her last start here after rearing at the break, heads a field of nine fillies and mares in Saturday's featured sixth race at Stampede Park.

The abbreviated card of seven races shares the spotlight with the simulcast of the Preakness Stakes from Pimlico, which will follow the final live race on the program.

Grovenor will be making her fourth start of the meet for trainer Floyd Arthur, and trying to rebound after losing all chance at the start against similar company May 3.

Grovenor's rider, Peter Wong, will seek a striking position as he breaks from post 8 in the six-furlong dash.

Reliza, who starts just inside of Grovenor, is expected to be part of the early pace, along with Galaxy Belle.

The race for $25,000 claimers carries a $17,000 purse and includes the entry of J.R Hatfield and Regal Illusion, trained by Ira Donald.

* The Hoofprint on My Heart on May 26, the major prep to the June 15 Alberta Derby, has drawn 19 nominees, including Dark Fuse, Intact, and Dance Me Free - the 1-2-3 finishers in the President's here last Saturday.

* Fancy As, winner of the 71st Alberta Derby last year on his way to Alberta horse of the year honors, has returned to trainer R. K. "Red" Smith's farm near Edmonton.

Smith decided to freshen Fancy As after a tough winter campaign at Santa Anita. The gelding was supposed to race at Woodbine in the spring and summer, but returned home after an unsatisfactory work at the Toronto course.
