'Bear' looks to rebound from loss

EDMONTON, Alberta - Smoking Bear helped Greg Tracy dominate the training standings this spring at Stampede Park, recording 3 victories in 4 outings. But the loss was in her last start.

Smoking Bear will look to bounce back from that defeat when she faces six other fillies and mares in Sunday's $22,000 claiming feature at 6 1/2 furlongs.

Smoking Bear, owned by High Field Stock Farm, moved quickly up the ladder at the start of the season by winning in succession at the $17,500, $22,000, and $30,000 levels. In her last start, a $40,000 optional claimer, Smoking Bear weakened to finish a well-beaten fifth.

Stephan Heiler, aboard Smoking Bear for her win at the $30,000 level, will get the mount. Smoking Bear, a Kentucky-bred 6-year-old, has drawn post 4.

Smoking Bear will have to hold off the often-claimed Fine by Me. Claimed from 3 of her 4 starts this season, Fine By Me is coming off a victory against $17,500 opposition. Once again, Shannon Beauregard will ride.

Ron Grieves claimed Fine by Me on behalf of previous owner Bar None Ranches off her latest appearance.

Bue Moon, searching for her second victory of the season, could also be in the mix. Quincy Welch will ride Bue Moon.

Bue Moon won her first race of the year on a disqualification when View Halloo's number was taken down for interference.
