Baze, Ricardo teaming at Ascot

Russell Baze and Jorge Ricardo, the two winningest jockeys in the history of Thoroughbred racing, will team up with Japan's all-time leading rider, Yutaka Take, at Ascot on Saturday as members of the Rest of the World team in the Shergar Cup jockey challenge.

The six-race contest, in which Baze, Ricardo, and Take will be facing sides from Britain, Ireland, and Europe, will be the first time the San Francisco-based Baze and the Argentine-based Ricardo have faced each other. Ricardo, the leading rider in his native Brazil 25 consecutive times, has ridden 10,299 winners during his South American career. Baze has 10,234 winners. With Take having ridden more than 3,000 winners, the team has more than 23,000 victories to its credit.

The British team consists of Frankie Dettori, Seb Sanders, and Hayley Turner. Jamie Spencer, Richard Hughes and Kevin Manning make up the Irish side, while the European team is formed by Hong Kong-based Frenchman Gerald Mosse, Italian Mirco Demuro and Turkey's Halis Karatas.

The six races on the Shergar Cup card are all 10-runner Class 2 handicaps, each worth $70,000, with each being run at a different distance between five furlongs and two miles. Each rider will have five mounts, and each member of the winning team will receive $5,000 in addition to their standard riding fees. Baze's best chance for victory appears to be in the two-mile Shergar Cup Stayers with 5-1 second choice Greenwich Meantime, the winner of the 2 5/16-mile Chester Cup in 2007 who was second in a similar handicap over the course and distance last time.
