Baze, Garcia share jockey title

SAN MATEO, Calif. - Apprentice jockey Martin Garcia won the final race of the meeting Sunday and tied perennial leader Russell Baze for the jockey championship of the 31-day Bay Meadows Holiday meeting.

Both riders won twice on the final day to finish with 47 victories. Garcia had 153 mounts during the meet, Baze 168.

Garcia won the second race with All Thee B, a mount he picked up late. Baze was scheduled to ride morning-line favorite Muevette, but she was scratched.

Baze scored back-to-back victories in the sixth and seventh races with favorites Windy Day and Andrea's Wish. Baze was third aboard his final mount of the day, Passion for Words in the eighth with Garcia fifth aboard Paranoide Mistress.

Garcia, who avoided injury when Rare Request suffered a fatal breakdown in the third, won the ninth with favored Sloat Blvd, who set the pace, was challenged and bumped by Bear Cub in the lane but was pulling clear late.

The shared title was Baze's 27th straight. He has won the past 35 Bay Meadows meets in which has participated.
