Bayern to stay in Derby Trial, Kentucky Derby unlikely

Bayern is unlikley to run back on one week of rest in the Kentucky Derby.

LOUISVILLE, Ky. - With the prospects of Bayern making the Kentucky Derby next Saturday growing increasingly doubtful, trainer Bob Baffert on Saturday morning said Bayern would run tonight at Churchill Downs in the Derby Trial.

Bayern currently ranks 23rd on the points list for prospective Derby runners, so he would need three horses ranked above him to drop out to make the Derby field.

The Derby Trial does not offer any points toward the Derby.

In theory, however, Bayern could make enough money Saturday night to move farther up the rankings based on the tie-breaker, earnings in non-restricted races. But it is extremely doubtful Baffert would run him back in a week in the Derby, being as that would mark three races in three weeks for Bayern, who ran in the Arkansas Derby just two weeks ago and has made just three lifetime starts.

Baffert has two runners in the Derby, Hoppertunity and Chitu.

If Bayern pulls a Cal Chrome (and some) tonight, somebody ought to rush the ambulance to Baffert's residence--a high fever will strike momentarily. Baffert is known for catching fever this time of the year--one week to the Derby or not. Good luck to Bayern tonight!

Don't bet churchill. They raised their takeout rates.

Baffert tears up more young horses before they open Del Mar for their 3yr old season than all the other trainers in the Derby this yr combined. Prestige and $ before integrity. No wonder there is an on going horse shortage in So. Cal.

There is an ongoing horse shortage in California due to many reasons. Expenses are higher in California is the main reason. Workers comp is paid by trainers, higher tax rates paid by owners and trainers on earnings and claims. A shortage of foals nationwide. Any high profile trainer sadly has high number of injuries simply because of the high number of horses. Del Mar has big fields due to incentives they offer to trainers shipping in. The rest of the tracks struggle to fill races due to the lack of horses.

;-)) IseroFL - Why don't you throw your hat in the ring. I'm sure you could be a top notch trainer if you put your mind to it.

I would like to thank everyone on the East Coast for looking past California Chrome because he is a Cal-Bred. The odds should be Even Money on CC, but because of the East Coast bias, I will get 3 to 1 or more. Thanks, CHA -CHING!!

I'm thinking 2 to 1, but it could be a steal. Still, it's really low when you consider how many things can go wrong in a 20 horse field.

It ALL depends on Post Position and the trip...JUST like every year...ALL 20 have a chance...if it rains...it is a crapshoot.

It's an incredible 'MUSH' to go around thanking people like this before the horse wins his race. If CC fails, those odds are worthless, remember that.

And he will fail.

Its not an east coast / west coast thing "homie".. His breeding is suspect at a mile and a quarter and he's shipping across the country to face 19 others on a track he's never run on.. with a pace that won't help any.. it's not tupac and biggie we dont care where he lives.

I agree. CC won't make the distance.

Watching Baffert interview on HRTV this morning, he couldn't be more clear that Bayern is his Derby horse. Unfortunate that it looks like he won't get in although best thing for the horse. Interesting that Rosie is on tonight instead of Gary Stevens. Hope he romps. But if he does, and leapfrogs 20 point stragglers w/ earnings, Baffert will be too tempted to run him back in Derby.

We've seen the less heralded horses win the Derby before out of a trainer's barn: Charismatic comes to mind. Wasn't he a Baffert horse (or was he a Lukas)? Either way he was from a barn that had a more highly touted horse. I like both of Baffert's other horses quite a bit for the Derby. In truth, I like them better than Bayern for a couple reasons: 1) Running styles - I think Bayern wants the lead too much at this point in his career and that would be an epic fail for him against this group. Hoppertunity is definitely willing to sit back and I believe Chitu won't mind being the necessary 5 to 7 lengths off the frontrunner's. 2) Experience - Chitu has the perfect amount by today's standard: 2 races at 2 races this year to prep leaving him in line for 3rd race form for the Derby. Hoppy has ran 5 times this year while not starting at 2, but his last prep was more workout than race and he was clearly the 2nd best even without the whip. Bayern looked very much like a horse needing in his last start to me and missed too much time to be viable for the Derby. 3) Bayern is NOT in the field. LOL! Hard to like him to win.

Bayern should jog in the Derby trial think he is better than Chitu or Midnight Hawk. Been training great over the track and had a good tough race. The Class and figure horse but no value everyone in the world know this and will wager on 3/5 or over would be fair.

I ail be surprised if Bayer goes as high as 3 to 5 in the Trial. I'm thinking 1 to 5. The only way to use him is in your multi-race bets as a single and hope some of your longer shots come in to bring the payoff up.

What does BB do if Bayern has a nice comfortable work tonite and he wins pulling up? First, he can lower the lasix amount, and second BB is one sly fox. gonna be interesting!!

It seems unlikely, but if Bayern pulls a California Chrome type performance shutting it down in the stretch for an easy win....Derby Fever could strike again. Baffert really likes this guy! While it probably isn't a good idea to try 3 races in 4 weeks with a modern horse, they used to run them like this all the time. I think where it would really show would be in his next race should he actually win the Derby. I just can't see any horse in this day and age running (and winning) 5 races in 9 weeks. Especially, one who had run in only 3 lifetime races prior to the Derby.
