Bay Meadows: Onebadshark captures Big Jag Handicap

SAN MATEO, Calif. - Onebadshark ($9.40) sat just behind pacesetting My Captain before proving best in the stretch as he won the $54,125 Big Jag Handicap at Bay Meadows on Sunday.

Favored My Captain set a brisk pace, going 22.02 for the opening quarter and 44.18 for the opening half as the two pulled away from their two rivals in the four-horse field.

Onebadshark put his nose in front at the eighth pole and pulled away to win the six-furlong race by one length in 1:08.71.

"That other horse was going pretty fast, but Francisco (Duran, My Captain's jockey) seemed to have a lot of horse," winning jockey Ron Warren said. "I had a lot of horse, too, so I didn't want to let him get too far in front of me. As soon as I asked him, he cut."

Winning trainer Brian Koriner said the scratch of Jagged Ice made it easier on Onebadshark, who has now won five of 13 starts.

"The scratch helped because there was no pressure outside him," Koriner said. "Running on his home track didn't hurt either. He didn't have to ship and was cool in the paddock."

Onebadshark earned $30,750 to lift his career earnings to $131,162.
