Bay Meadows names managers


Bernie Thurman and Mike Ziegler will head the management team that will run Bay Meadows when its meet begins on Feb. 2, announced Jack Liebau, president of the Bay Meadows Racing Association. This will be the first meet to be conducted by the association, which owns the track and was granted the racing dates for 2005 over Magna Entertainment Corp., which had been leasing the track and running the racing operation.

Thurman, the former Bay Meadows general manager for Magna, will become general manager for administration. Ziegler, who served as Magna's California vice president of marketing, will be general manager for operations.

Others appointed to the management team include Mike Scalzo, former Golden Gate Fields general manager, who will be vice president of operations; Tom Doutrich, a former racing secretary at Bay Meadows, racing secretary; Richard Lewis, coordinator of racing; Kay Webb, simulcast coordinator; and Diane Grealish, vice president of sales.

Bob Turman will continue as the superintendent of the main track and Bernie Eastridge supervisor of the turf course. Brian Wayte will head the mutuels department, Jim Fetter broadcasting, and Caesar Roldan the physical plant.
