Bay Meadows: Euchre rebounds

Email

SAN MATEO, Calif. - Euchre, ridden by Jason Lumpkins, ran down the favored Irisheyesareflying and Russell Baze to win the $150,000, Grade 3 All American Handicap by 1 1/2 lengths at Bay Meadows Monday.

Euchre went four wide around the first turn of the 1 1/16-mile race, with Irisheyesareflying five wide. Irisheyesareflying quickly moved up to battle for the lead with the longshot Prodigious, while Euchre settled into fourth place in the field of eight older horses.

The fractions were fairly fast - 22.75 seconds, 45.69, and 1:09.47 - and Irisheyesareflying put Prodigious away in early stretch and briefly opened a clear lead. Euchre, however, caught him just past the eighth pole, then pulled away late.

Irisheyesareflying finished second by 1 1/2 lengths over the 22-1 Moonlight Charger.

Euchre, a Grade 2 winner, rebounded from a poor effort in the Mervyn LeRoy at Hollywood Park on May 5. He ran the distance in 1:41.69, earned $82,500 for owner Stronach Stables, and paid $7 to win as the second choice.

Baze, who regained the lead in the jockey race from Lumpkins earlier in the program, has not won a stakes race since Feb. 10, when he won the Golden State Mile at Golden Gate Fields aboard Gold Trader. Since then, he has lost 23 stakes in a row, finishing second 11 times and third twice.
