Barretts Race Meet releases 2013 stakes schedule

Older sprinters will run for higher stakes purses at the Barretts Race Meet at the Los Angeles County Fair at Fairplex in September.

The schedule was released Thursday for the 13-day meeting, which runs from Sept. 6-22. A majority of the 12 stakes, worth a collective $775,000, will be run for the same prize money as in 2012 and retain the same position on the track’s calendar.

The most notable change was the Governor’s Cup over 6 1/2 furlongs on Sept. 18. The purse has been increased by $25,000, to $75,000, for 2013. In addition, purses in overnight races have been increased 5 percent from 2012.

The richest races of the meeting, at $100,000 each, are the Barretts Debutante and Barretts Juvenile for 2-year-olds on Sept. 14-15 for sale graduates, and the Ralph Hinds Pomona Invitational on Sept. 22. The Barretts races are run over 6 1/2 furlongs. The Hinds is run at about 1 1/8 miles, the longest stakes of the meeting.

First post time for the Barretts Race meeting will be 1 p.m. from Thursday through Sunday. Wednesday racing starts at 4 p.m. The race meeting coincides with the Los Angeles County Fair, which runs from Aug. 30 to Sept. 29.
