Barretts opening average rises

The Barretts winter mixed auction in Pomona, Calif., entered its second and final day Wednesday after mixed results at its opening.

As of 5:30 p.m. Eastern, the $110,000 Storm Cat mare Catrina was Wednesday's top seller. Magali Ventures purchased the 8-year-old mare from Berkey Bloodstock, agent. Berkey Bloodstock sold Catrina, a daughter of Grade 3 winner Marshua's Dancer in foal to Malek, on behalf of the Ridder Thoroughbred Stable.

On Tuesday, the first session posted a sharp gain in gross revenue with 269 lots bringing $2,122,800, well up from last year, when just 207 head brought $1,567,500. The first-day average price climbed 4 percent to $7,891. But the median dipped slightly, falling from $4,500 last year to 4,200.

Tuesday's opening session hit its high note with $100,000 Regiment, a Grade 3-placed stakes winner offered by Kristin Mulhall as agent for The Thoroughbred Corp. Bruno de Berdt, agent, purchased Regiment, a 4-year-old Outflanker colt.
