Barretts October yearling catalogs available online

Barretts Sales and Racing has released the catalog for its October yearling sale, scheduled to be held on Oct. 8 at the Hinds Pavilion on the grounds of Fairplex Park in Pomona, Calif. The single-session sale is scheduled to begin at 1 p.m. Pacific.

Barretts cataloged 248 yearlings for the sale, up 5 percent from last year’s auction. Sires represented include prominent commercial stallions Ghostzapper, Giant’s Causeway, More Than Ready, and Stormy Atlantic as well as leading California sires Tribal Rule and Unusual Heat and California second-crop stallions Papa Clem and Square Eddie. First-crop sires with yearlings cataloged include Majesticperfection, Super Saver, and The Pamplemousse.

Last year’s October sale grossed $4,006,600 from 174 yearlings sold, a 54 percent increase from 2011. The average of $23,026 climbed 36 percent, the $18,000 median skyrocketed 85 percent, and the buyback rate dropped from 30 percent to 19 percent. A Bertrando colt out of the unraced Tale of the Cat mare Telling Stories sold for $150,000 to lead the sale. He was consigned by Willow Tree Farm, agent, and purchased by Arnold Zetcher; later named Bookworm, the colt has yet to start.

Del Mar Grade 2 winner Alberts Hope, by Run Away and Hide, also sold at the October sale, for $40,000. He has won his first two starts and is entered in the Grade 1 Del Mar Futurity on Sept. 4, the track’s closing day.
