Barretts, Del Mar to hold second Paddock Sale on July 21

Barretts Sales and Racing and Del Mar Thoroughbred Club have set Sunday, July 21, as the date for their second annual Paddock Sale for horses of racing age, to be held at the racetrack in Del Mar, Calif.

Nominations close on June 4, but entries will be accepted until two weeks prior to the sale. Horses qualifying for Del Mar’s “Ship and Win” program—which awards a bonus to horses that race during the meet after making their previous start out of state—will receive a shipping subsidy up to $1,500. Del Mar’s meet runs from July 17 through Sept. 4.

Last year’s inaugural auction offered 45 horses. Of those, four 2-year-olds and 21 horses of racing age sold for total receipts of $933,000, posting an average price of $37,320 and a median of $20,000.

“The objective of this sale is to encourage ownership and attract new people to the game,” Barretts general manager Kim Lloyd said. “Last year’s catalog has already produced [stakes winners] Nechez Dawn and I Dazzle, who was Grade 2-placed last weekend at Hollywood Park for first-time owner Peter Peluso.”

Nechez Dawn, who brought the 2012 sale’s second-highest price of $125,000, won the Daisycutter Stakes during Del Mar’s meet last year and finished second by a neck in the Very One Stakes last week at Pimlico Race Course. Before finishing third in the Grade 2 Marjorie Everett on May 18 at Hollywood Park, I Dazzle won the one-mile American Beauty at Santa Anita on April 7. Peluso purchased the Louisiana-bred daughter of Hold That Tiger for $29,000 at the 2012 sale.

The Paddock Sale will commence after Del Mar’s racecard ends on Sunday evening.
