Barretts day up all around

Fueled by a record session-topper, the Barretts January mixed auction's opening day rang up increases across the board on Monday in Pomona, Calif.

The first of two sessions sold 223 horses for gross receipts of $2,562,600, an increase of 6 percent from last year's equivalent session. The average price climbed 14 percent, from $10,053 to $11,491, and the median price rose 25 percent, from $4,000 to $5,000.

Selvatica, a 6-year-old stakes-winning mare, topped the session by bringing $560,000, a record for the Barretts January mixed auction. The Narvick International agency purchased the mare from Granja Vista Del Rio's complete dispersal, consigned by the Havens Bloodstock Agency.

Selvatica is by Forestry out of the Grade 3-placed stakes-winner Pareja, by Strawberry Road. She is a Granja Vista Del Rio homebred and three-time stakes-winner, with her biggest victory coming in last year's Bangles and Beads Stakes at Fairplex. She has earnings of $219,720.

The sale was to continue through Tuesday at the Barretts facility at Fairplex in Pomona.
