Barracks Road turns tables on odds-on Somme


ETOBICOKE, Ontario - Barracks Road held off 2-5 favorite Somme in the stretch to notch her first stakes victory Saturday at Woodbine in the 37th running of the $150,000 .

With Corey Fraser aboard, Barracks Road ($8.40) vied up front with longshot Amiable Grace through a slow opening quarter in 24.47 seconds in the one-mile turf race for Ontario-bred 3-year-old fillies.

Barracks Road assumed command through a half in 47.87, and then opened up about a three-length lead at the head of the stretch en route to a three-quarter-length score, in a time of 1:35.42, over a course labeled good.

Somme stalked in third before closing gradually in the lane, and finished a length in front of a maiden, Thislilsoulofmine, who earned black type for ending up third. Tennessee Lamb and Amiable Grace completed the order of finish. There was no show wagering.

Mark Casse trains the Melnyk Racing Stable-owned Barracks Road, who finished sixth behind victorious Somme in the June 13 Alywow Stakes.
