Barn fire kills 43 horses

A barn fire killed 43 horses at Eureka Downs in Eureka, Kan., on Sunday morning. The fire, which broke out at about 6 a.m. and was limited to a single barn, is still under investigation.

Gene Ralston, a spokesman for the Kansas Quarter Horse Racing Association, said no humans had died in the blaze, which claimed both Quarter Horses and Thoroughbreds. Ralston said that he believed that about five or six trainers lost horses, with Jose Ibarra losing 23.

One surviving Quarter Horse somehow got out of the barn. That horse, Smart Effort, has burns over 25 percent of his body, but is expected to recover, said Ralston.
