Barfly's Survivor connects at 34-1 in Alberta Breeders' Handicap


Barfly’s Survivor pulled off a huge upset in the $50,000 Alberta Breeders’ Handicap at Northlands Park on Saturday. He paid $70.90 as the longest price in the 1 1/16-mile race for 3-year-olds and up.

With Nela Mohammed aboard, Barfly’s Survivor forced the pace while going three-wide around all three turns.  He held a half-length advantage over Silver Baubles at the top of the stretch and was able to hold off Silver Baubles, who fought back gamely after relinquishing the lead prior to entering the stretch. Heavily favored For Cash had a rough trip, finishing third.

Barfly’s Survivor is trained by Jerri Robertson, who gave a lot of credit to Mohammed for the shocking result.

“Nobody told the horse he was 30-1 and Nela gave him a gutsy ride,” said Robertson.

The final time for was 1:46.63.

The Breeders’ was the featured race on Fall Classic Day, which included seven $50,000 stakes races restricted to horses bred in Alberta.

Heavily favored Wild Legend ($2.90) kicked off the stakes festivities with a 17 1/2- length romp in the Beaufort Stakes for 3-year-olds going 1 1/16 miles.  He was ridden by Scott Williams and is trained by Dale Saunders. Wild Legend posted a final time of 1:44.81.

Tiny Giant paid $4.80 for his 2 3/4-length win over Gone in a Flash in the 6 ½- furlong Red Diamond Express for 3-year-olds and up. It was the 995th win for trainer Joan Petrowski. Ridden by Rico Walcott, Tiny Giant covered the distance in 1:17.16.

Walcott also guided Ginger Smash to a convincing 5 1/4- length win in the Sturgeon River for 2-year-old fillies. Sent off as the 7-5 favorite in the nine-horse field, she paid $4.90. The final time for 6 1/2 furlongs was 1:20.53 Ginger Smash is trained by Canadian Hall of Fame trainer Red Smith.

Centrefire, trained by Greg Tracy, paid $10.20 for his easy win in the Alberta Premiers. Ridden by Scott Williams, Centrefire rallied from well back to win the 6 1/2- furlong race by six lengths. The final time was 1:19.79.

Brady’s Tomboy paid $17.60 for her narrow win over Tempered Sky in the Distaff. With Williams aboard, she came from last to edge Tempered Sky by a head in the 1 1/16-mile race for fillies and mares. The final time was 1:47.30. It was the second stakes win on the card for trainer Dale Saunders.

Williams closed off the 10-race card with his fourth stakes win aboard Saint Sassy Sue in the 1 1/16-mile Northlands Park Oaks. She paid $9.50 as the second choice in the wagering behind Rosavita, who went unplaced.

Trained by Amber Buniak, Saint Sassy Sue posted a final time of 1:40.80.
