Bare Necessities wins Indiana Oaks

ANDERSON, Ind. - Bare Necessities posted the biggest win of her young career Friday night as she took the $306,400 Indiana Breeders' Cup Oaks at Hoosier Park over eight other 3-year-old fillies.

Ridden by Jose Validivia, Bare Necessities settled off the early pace set by Erica's Smile over a muddy surface to stalk the pace in fourth. She moved to challenge through the far turn and caught Erica's Smile nearing the stretch before drawing off to score by eight lengths in the 1 1/16-mile race.

Erica's Smile pulled herself to the front as the field raced to the first turn. She clicked off fractions of 22.95 seconds, 47.11, and 1:12.62 before giving up the lead to Bare Necessities, who covered the mile in 1:39.01 and finished up in 1:45.83.

Erica's Smile held second, 2 1/4 lengths in front of Tarnished Lady in third.

Bare Necessities returned $7.40 as the favorite and combined with Erica's Smile for a 4-9 exacta worth $50. She earned $183,840 and boosted her record to 3-0-1 from 8 starts while winning her first stakes.

Trained by Wallace Dollase, Bare Necessities was making her first start outside California.

* Also on Friday night, Amanda's Crown rallied from far back to take the $44,350 Vincennes Stakes by 1 1/4 lengths over nine other Indiana-bred 3-year-old fillies. Ridden by Mark Guidry, she ran down 8-5 favorite Demi Paige in the closing sixteenth and paid $6.80 to win.

* Hurricane Hebe captured the $33,650 City of Anderson Stakes for 2-year-old statebred fillies as the 3-10 favorite.
