Barbecue Eddie headed to Dubai

Barbecue Eddie will head to Dubai for the March 29 Dubai Golden Shaheen after zipping five furlongs in 59 seconds at Santa Anita on Tuesday morning. The trip is scheduled to happen even though Barbecue Eddie, a Stormy Atlantic 4-year-old, has never won a graded stakes.

"It's a great opportunity," said trainer Brian Koriner. "He went really well and will have one more breeze next week before he leaves for Dubai. It be will something pretty light, and we'll send him on his way."

Barbecue Eddie finished ahead of Golden Shaheen-bound Idiot Proof when second to In Summation in the El Conejo Handicap on New Year's Day, prompting the decision to try the Golden Shaheen. Barbecue Eddie has since finished a neck second to In Summation in the Palos Verdes Handicap on Jan. 21.

Barbecue Eddie and Idiot Proof will be joined by the Bill Currin-trained Underwood Stakes winner Bushwacker in the $2 million six-furlong Golden Shaheen, where they will meet recent 4 1/2-length Nad Al Sheba Group 3 sprint winner Diabolical.

In addition to World Cup favorite Curlin, other Americans who will be traveling to Dubai for the $21 million World Cup card include Well Armed for the World Cup; San Luis Obispo winner Spring House and Better Talk Now for the 1 1/2-mile Dubai Sheema Classic; Massive Drama for the UAE Derby; and Barcola for the Godolphin Mile.
