Barbaro's attitude 'excellent'

Kentucky Derby winner Barbaro continues to maintain his comfort while recovering from a broken right hind leg and severe laminitis in his left hind leg, his surgeon said Monday.

The 3-year-old colt could undergo a cast change on his right hind leg sometime this week, said Dr. Dean Richardson, the chief of surgery at the University of Pennsylvania's New Bolton Center in Kennett Square, Pa. Barbaro remains in intensive care at the center's large-animal hospital.

"He's maintaining an excellent attitude," Richardson said in a release the hospital issued Monday afternoon. "We change his left hind foot cast regularly, and we may change his right hind cast some time this week."

Barbaro's lower right hind leg shattered early in the running of the May 20 Preakness Stakes. The next day, Richardson inserted a locking compression plate and 27 screws to repair major fractures in the area.
