Banned, Del Mar Derby winner, euthanized

ARCADIA, Calif. - Banned, the winner of the Grade 2 Del Mar Derby and two other graded stakes this year, was euthanized on Saturday because of complications from a suspensory injuries suffered in a late-September workout, trainer Tom Proctor said.

"He was foundering," Proctor said. "He wasn't going to make it."

Banned underwent surgery on Sept. 24, two days after he was injured in a turf workout, and was in guarded condition at Proctor's barn at Santa Anita as of Friday, Proctor said. His condition deteriorated into Saturday.

Owned by breeder Glen Hill Farms, Banned won 5 of 10 starts and $599,476. The Grade 2 Del Mar Derby was his final start of a career that included wins in two springtime turf stakes at Churchill Downs - the Grade 2 American Turf Stakes and Grade 3 Jefferson Cup Stakes.
