Banker's D Light surprises at 24-1

Banker's D Light, the longest price among eight Minnesota-breds at 24-1, upset the $50,000 10,000 Lakes Stakes at Canterbury Park on Saturday.

Racing near the pace from the outset while along the rail, Banker's D Light ($50.20), ridden by Anne Van Rosen for trainer Phil Hartman, challenged for the lead entering the turn, opened up a 3 1/2-length lead margin, then held well to prevail by 1 1/2 lengths while completing the six furlongs in 1:12.49. Trickyville Dew finished second, a half-length in front of Bee O Bee Bob.

* A. J. Bakes ($6) began the 2008 Canterbury season where she left off last year with 1 3/4-length win in the $50,000 Lady Slipper Stakes for statebred fillies and mares.

The second betting choice in a field of 12, A. J. Bakes, trained by Todd Hoffrogge and ridden by Scott Stevens, prompted the pace outside favored Thanks for the Tip, then turned back a challenge from Pretty as a Smile. Hills of Ireland rallied from mid-pack to secure second late, finishing a length in front of Pretty as a Smile.
