Bandini to have surgery

Bandini has joined Bellamy Road on the disabled list. Bandini, the 19th-place finisher as the 6-1 third choice in the Kentucky Derby, came out of the race with a chip in his right-front ankle that will require surgery.

"He's got a little chip in his right front ankle, and he's going to have surgery," said trainer Todd Pletcher. "We're looking at a fall campaign at this point."

Bandini traveled to Ashford Stud in Lexington, Ky., Sunday, the day after the Kentucky Derby, in which he backed up steadily after chasing a quick pace.

"When a horse of his quality runs that kind of race, you're looking for an explanation," said Pletcher. "You never want to have a good horse get injured, but on the bright side, we know why he didn't run his race."
