Bailey resigns from Guild board

Jerry Bailey, a past president of the Jockeys' Guild, has resigned from the executive board of the Guild, which has been divided recently as a result of wholesale changes in the executive offices in Lexington, Ky.

Matrix Capital Associates, a California-based consulting firm headed by Dr. L. Wayne Gertmenian, has been brought in as an interim manager of the Guild. Bailey, who emphasized that he remains a member of the Guild, said on Wednesday that he resigned from the board because several attempts to obtain business references from Matrix proved fruitless.

Because of that, Bailey said, "I could not in good faith go back to my constituents and recommend them. It was pointless for me to spend time and energy on this when I felt I was being stonewalled. They might be great, but I could not in good faith stand behind the vote." The executive committee voted to bring in Matrix, but Bailey cast a dissenting vote.

Bailey said he mailed a resignation letter to all 26 board members last Friday. Pat Day recently resigned as both president and as a member of the Guild.
