Baffert firster has the look of a runner

EmailSAN MATEO, Calif. - All signs point to a strong debut by Hoods Up Sunday in a 5 1/2-furlong maiden special weight race for 2-year-olds.

Trained by Bob Baffert, Hoods Up is nicely bred - by Dixie Union out of the stakes-placed Ocean Air - and sold for $200,000 in February at Ocala. His works have been regular and include a pair of solid six-furlong drills. Dixie Union has a decent record with juvenile first-timers (12 for 127). His dam, Ocean Air, has had three previous foals and all won, two of them at 2. Baffert wins at a 20 percent rate with first-timers and 28 percent with 2-year-olds.

Hoods Up will be well-backed so there may be price to be found elsewhere with Moonlit Master, who has run well in both his starts despite stumbling while leaving the gate in his last start.

Like Hoods Up, Moonlit Master has three siblings, all winners. One is multiple stakes winner More Moonlight and one is the multiple-stakes-placed Mystical Moonlight.

Two other first-timers could figure in the race. Billy Cash, by In Excess and the first foal of a graded stakes winner from Argentina, drew the rail, while Savo Island, who has a pair of black-type siblings, enters the race with a five-furlong bullet drill from the gate for trainer Greg Gilchrist.

Baze streaks through week

Coming off a five-win day Wednesday, Russell Baze won six races on Thursday's Bay Meadows card.

Baze won the first race with High Resolve ($2.10), second with Tail Spin Topper ($2.40), fourth with Yodelay You're Who ($3.40), fifth with Roses 'n Rainbows (the day's highest-paying winner at $6.40), sixth with Deal the Heat ($3.80), and seventh with Delectable Della ($2.80).

Frank Alvarado won the day's other two races, with Sweet Addition ($3.80) in the third and Held Up ($4.60) in the eighth.

Through the Thursday card, Baze had won with 12 of his past 14 mounts going back to Sunday. He finished third with Bean Who with his other mount Thursday.

High Resolve makes it 2 for 2

She only had two rivals after a pair of scratches, and trainer Greg Gilchrist thought she might be coming down with something, but High Resolve improved her record to 2 for 2 Thursday in a six-furlong $40,000 optional claimer. She defeated Sassy Blend by seven lengths as Baze spent most of the stretch gearing her down and looking for competition.

Gilchrist said High Resolve will be pointed to the $150,000 Joe O'Farrell Juvenile Fillies at seven furlongs at Calder on Nov. 10.

* Trainer Jerry Hollendorfer plans to send Bwana Bull and Double Action to Monmouth with Breeders' Cup-bound Hystericalady on Tuesday. Bwana Bull will run in the Grade 3, $250,000 Pegasus at 1 1/8 miles with Double Action slated for the $200,000 Select at six furlongs on Saturday's Breeders' Cup undercard.
