Bach's Homebrew starts slow, finishes fast

LINCOLN, Neb. - Bach's Homebrew overcame a slow start to post an 8 1/4-length win in the $16,350 Journal Star Stakes at Lincoln Race Course on Saturday afternoon.

Ridden by Armando Martinez, Bach's Homebrew was shuffled to last at the start of the six-furlong race and quickly dropped to the inside to stalk the pace set by Beloit Kan Too. As Bingosablumin challenged the leader from the outside after a half-mile, Bach's Homebrew quickly rallied inside the pair to draw clear by four lengths turning for home, then drew off under energetic hand urging from Martinez.

The win was the first in a stakes for Bach's Homebrew, who was coming off a narrow loss to Cherishistheword in the Fonner Park Special on May 8. Cherishistheword was sent off as the 7-5 favorite in the field of seven Nebraska-bred 3-year-olds in the Journal Star, but never fired, finishing fifth.

Bach's Homebrew returned $8.40 for the win while Prairie Meadows invader Develish Jack finished second. Bingosblumin held third, another 5 3/4 lengths back.

Bach's Homebrew and Bingosablumin raced as a coupled entry for trainer Larry Staroscik and Don Everett's Bluestem Farm. Bach's Homebrew covered the distance in 1:13.80 over a fast track and moved his record to 3-1-1 from 6 starts.
