Awesome Humor beaten

LOUISVILLE, Ky. - Awesome Humor, previously unbeaten, finished a nonthreatening fourth as the 1-2 favorite in the Wednesday feature at Churchill Downs, a six-furlong allowance won by Love Talkin.

It was Awesome Humor's first start since undergoing ankle surgery. Her 2-year-old season ended with a victory in the Grade 1 Spinaway on Aug. 30.

Awesome Humor, the only 3-year-old in a field of six, was beaten 14 lengths, losing for the first time in five career starts for her trainer, Elliott Walden.

Love Talkin paid $7.40 after leading throughout to win in a rapid 1:08.34 over Brown Eyed Beauty, with Abundantly Blessed third. With $85,554 of a $102,372 show pool bet on Awesome Humor, the show payoffs on the top three finishers were $9.80, $13.80, and $24.40.

* Pat Day ended a rare losing streak when he won the ninth race on Mananan McLir ($3.40). Before that, Day, the all-time Churchill leader, had lost with 27 straight mounts, including 15 favorites.

* The Churchill turf course record for five furlongs was lowered to 55.57 seconds when Are You Down ($31), a 4-year-old gelding making his turf debut, won the seventh race.
