Australia's top 3-year-old fillies line up in One Thousand Guineas

Melbourne's Caulfield Cup Festival continues Wednesday as some of Australia's best 3-year-old fillies take center stage in the Group 1, $511,000 Schweppes One Thousand Guineas.

Heading the expected field of 12 is Atlantic Jewel, an undefeated Fastnet Rock filly owned by Coolmore and trained by man of the moment Mark Kavanagh, who also trains the current heavy Caulfield Cup favorite, December Draw. Atlantic Jewel, who has displayed an electric turn of foot, must handle a rise in class as she is facing group company for the first time in the Guineas against some accomplished foes.

Amongst the chief threats, Mosheen, victorious against Group 2 company over the Guineas distance of one mile on Oct. 2, and Hallowell Belle, second to notable absentee Streama in a Randwick Group 1 race on Oct. 1, both possess tactical speed, a valuable asset when racing at Caulfield. Longshot Cute Emily, who like Hallowell Belle hails from Peter Moody's powerful yard, could prove a threat if left alone on the front end.

The One Thousand Guineas has a scheduled post time of 12:40 a.m. Eastern on Wednesday. The Festival's highlighted $2.5 million Caulfield Cup, an important stepping stone to the Nov. 1 Melbourne Cup, will draw its 18 strong field of handicap horses later tonight as connections ready for Saturday's 2400 meter test.
