Australian sire General Nediym dies at 14

LEXINGTON, Ky. - Top Australian sire General Nediym was euthanized Monday morning at age 14 after colicking, according to Widden Stud, where he stood.

General Nediym is the sire of 2004 Australian champion 3-year-old filly Regimental Gal and current juvenile filly standout Paprika. Before going to stud, he was known as one of Australia's best sprinters in the late 1990s, with wins in the Group 1 Newmarket Handicp and Lightning Stakes leading his resume.

The farm had taken the Nediym horse off stud duty in December due to colic. He underwent surgery early in December after covering 148 mares.

"He became uncomfortable again last night, and despite the best veterinary efforts to save him, there was nothing that could be done," said Widden owner Antony Thompson.

General Nediym led Australia's sires of juvenile winners and stakes winners in the 2007-08 racing season. He also ranked fifth among Australian sires by individual winners.

General Nediym is the best foal to date out of Military Belle, an unraced daughter of Without Fear.
