Simone Montgomorie, an Australian jockey, died Monday after sustaining “traumatic injuries” when she was thrown from her mount at Darwin Racecourse, according to Australian press reports.

Montgomerie, 26, was thrown from her mount in the sixth race and was then struck by trailing horses, according to the reports. She was treated on the track, but was pronounced dead shortly after arriving at a nearby hospital.

The day’s remaining races were canceled following the incident, including the Darwin Cup.

Montgomerie had won 27 races so far during the Australian racing season. Her father, Peter Montgomerie, trained 2005 Melbourne Cup runner-up On A Jeune.
