Australia: Mosheen takes Guineas at Flemington

Email

Mosheen, the winner of the Group 1 Crown Oaks last November, rallied between horses to win the third group stakes of her career in Saturday’s $802,000 Australian Guineas at Flemington Racecourse.

Ridden by Danny Nikolic, Mosheen, a 4-1 chance, finished three lengths clear of 16-1 Strike the Stars. Mosheen broke from the outside in the field of 16, and led for the final quarter-mile.

Master Milton, a 90-1 outsider in the field of 16, finished third, 5 1/4 lengths behind the winner. Helmet, the 16-5 favorite, finished 12th after a poor start.  He won the Group 1 Caulfield Guineas last October, but had lost his last two starts, including an eighth as the favorite in the Group 1 Cox Plate against older horses last fall.

The Group 1 Australian Guineas was run over a mile on soft turf for Southern Hemisphere 3-year-olds.

Mosheen, an Australian-bred by Fastnet Rock, races for trainer Robert Smerdon and is owned by a partnership. She will be pointed for the $642,000 Coolmore Classic on March 24, a Group 1 over about 7 1/2 furlongs for fillies and mares.

Last fall, Mosheen won a Group 2 race and was second in the Group 1 Schweppes Thousand Guineas at Caulfield.
