Auguri victorious in John's Call

SARATOGA SPRINGS, N.Y. - After Mother Nature cooperated, Auguri did the rest in Sunday's $75,300 John's Call Stakes at Saratoga.

Overnight rains forced the John's Call Stakes, scheduled for 1 5-8 miles on the Mellon Turf Course, to be transferred to the main track and run at 1 3-16 miles. Though his connections didn't designate him as a main-track only when they supplemented him to the race for $200 on Friday, Auguri was only going to run if the race was moved to the dirt.

Auguri, under Richard Migliore, then set a soft enough early pace that he had plenty left to turn back a stern challenge around the far turn from Misto Quente to bound clear to a 4 1-2-length victory over that rival. It was another 3 1-2 lengths back to Approved by Dylan, who nosed out My Snookie's Boy for third.

Auguri, an Argentine-bred son of Luhuk owned by Roy and Gretchen Jackson's Lael Stable and trained by Barclay Tagg, covered the 1 3-16 miles in 1:56.46 over a drying out track labeled fast and returned $5.50 as the favorite.

"My only instructions to Richie were not to rush him to the front," Tagg said. "He did a masterful job of getting him there and keeping him there. It was our plan all along to run him on the dirt. It was calling for rain all weekend."

Tagg said he would continue to look for races at 1 1-4 miles or longer for Auguri.
